How a Farmer’s Daughter Built a Flower Shop

Mary Schroeder grew up on a farm outside Chilton. Her parents raised dahlias and zinnias for the local market—not as a business, but as a side project that fed their love of growing things. Every summer, her mother’s garden exploded into color, and Mary would help arrange buckets of blooms for farmers market stands.

That’s the foundation. Everything else followed naturally.

From Hobby to Shop

In 2011, Mary opened Just For You from a small storefront on Main Street. She was 28. The first year was slow—maybe 40 customers total. But she remembered faces. She remembered what people bought and when they bought it. Mrs. Anderson always needed white flowers for church arrangements. The Jacksons had four kids with scattered birthdays, so she made a standing arrangement service for them.

One moment clarified everything. It was March 2012, and the high school basketball team won regionals. The entire community wanted celebratory flowers. Mary stayed open until 9 PM that night, arranging bouquets between customers and phone calls. She ran out of vases. She used mason jars. A photograph from that night ended up in the local newspaper—Mary surrounded by stems, laughing.

That photo changed something. Chilton realized they had a real florist again, not just someone selling grocery-store bouquets in a card shop.

Who We Are Today

Fifteen years later, Just For You occupies the entire Main Street building—shop front, cooler space, and office upstairs. We’ve got two part-time designers working with Mary. We handle hundreds of weddings, corporate events, and everyday arrangements every year.

But the philosophy hasn’t changed. We know our customers. We remember anniversaries. When Tom comes in without an occasion but says “surprise me,” we know whether he wants formal or loose, and what colors his wife actually likes despite what he claims.

We’re open six days a week. We answer the phone. We don’t play hold music.

Design Philosophy

Mary’s aesthetic comes from watching her mother layer a garden—nothing too planned, everything thoughtful. She favors mixed materials over matchy perfection. You’ll see garden roses mixed with hypericum berries and unexpected greenery. Textures matter more than color perfection.

For weddings, we build arrangements that feel intimate even in large spaces. Nothing sterile. Nothing that looks like it came from a catalog. We want your ceremony flowers to feel like they belong in your story, not borrowed from someone else’s Pinterest board.

Sourcing & Sustainability

We maintain direct relationships with three regional growers. In peak seasons, 75% of our inventory comes from farms within 90 miles of Chilton—mostly from Wisconsin, some from Michigan. We’ve visited every farm. Mary knows the owners.

During winter and for specialty imports, we work with wholesale sources we’ve vetted. We refuse to carry flowers shipped from overseas just to have unusual options. We’d rather say “that’s not available this week” than compromise on sourcing.

Every arrangement uses flowers that are in season or properly preserved. That directly impacts how long they last in your home.

What Customers Tell Us

“We’ve been ordering flowers from Just For You for seven years. Mary knows our kids’ names. She knows what colors our kitchen is. It feels like shopping from a friend.” — David and Sarah M.

“We had our wedding flowers done by Mary. She listened to what we wanted, showed us samples, and delivered something that was both professional and deeply personal.” — Jennifer K.

“There’s a standing arrangement order for my office. Every week, something fresh and beautiful shows up. My clients always comment on it.” — Robert P.

Continuity & Community

Mary’s two kids grew up in the shop. Her daughter occasionally helps with events. She hasn’t decided whether to take it over, but Mary’s made peace with whatever comes next. The important thing is that Chilton has a real florist—someone who cares, remembers, and treats every bouquet like it matters.

We’re proud to be part of the fabric here. We sponsor the high school prom. We donate flowers for weddings when couples are struggling with budget. We remember. That’s the whole point.
